Laguna Bacalar Institute
Dedicated to Conserving the Pristine Ecology of Laguna Bacalar Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Laguna Bacalar is one of the unique, world class freshwater lakes on earth. Its clarity and some of its life are more similar to the Caribbean than is found in any other lake in the world.

The Maya called Laguna Bacalar the Lake of Seven Colors for its varying shades of turquoise and blue.

Laguna Bacalar Research
Prospective research will focus on the ecology and biogeochemistry of Laguna Bacalar. The project title is: Laguna Bacalar Sublacutrine Ecology and Biogeochemistry: the influence of cenote coupling.
Events
Mexico's 2nd largest natural lake, 35 miles long with turquoise freshwater, white beaches, cenotes, jungle, mangroves,  unique ecology, culture, and history. One of the world's true natural treasures.

The Institute's mission is the conservation of Laguna Bacalar and to enhance its recognition as a world class lake. The Institute promotes the interlacing of scientific based operations, conservation groups, and promotes local and regional education. Focusing attention to this unique Mexican natural treasure through stewardship, educational, and scientific activities will enhance the preservation of Laguna Bacalar as economic development progresses. To do nothing will accelerate the gradual degradation of Laguna Bacalar and loss of this world treasure.

The Institute also operates 'Monkeys without Borders' (see link to right).

International Stromatolite Conference, 2011
The Laguna Bacalar Institute is in the early planning stages for a major scientific conference to be held in Bacalar, Mexico. Laguna Bacalar has a unique biodiversity unlike any other lake in the world. One of these unique elements of the biota is the Giant Stromatolites. Stromatolites are the earliest life form discovered on Earth. The laguna's biogeochemistry has allow these life forms to flourish in both number and exceptional size. More information will be available as the conference plans take shape.
